OPTICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF HEAT TRANSFER NEAR AN AIR-WATER INTERFACE,

Abstract

The report is concerned with the evaluation of a recently constructed Mach-Zehnder interferometer which utilizes a gas laser light source. The feasibility using this instrument to study heat transfer rates in liquid media was demonstrated, and preliminary results are presented. The experimental procedures used in the adjustment, calibration, and evaluation are presented in detail. Temperature gradients were measured near a heated, submerged surface in a water tank, as well as in the thin thermal layer formed in the liquid at a liquid-air interface. (Author)
