THE EFFECT OF PARA-SUBSTITUTION ON THE RATES OF REACTION OF CERTAIN ARYL-PHOSPHATE ESTERS WITH PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES.

Abstract

The bimolecular reaction behavior of chymotrypsin and trypsin and a number of para-substituted dialkyl phenylphosphates was studied. The influence of the aryl group on the rate of reaction does not appear to be related to the aryl-amino acid specificity of chymotrypsin, and the rates of reaction do not correlate with simple substituent constants. The results are discussed and interpreted in terms of the current knowledge of the mechanism of action of proteolytic enzymes and their inhibition by toxic phosphorus compounds. (Author)
