COUPLE-STRESSES AND SINGULAR STRESS CONCENTRATIONS IN ELASTIC SOLIDS.

Abstract

The results summarized and discussed here concern the influence of couple-stresses upon singular concentrations of stress within a linearized Cosserat theory of elastic behavior with constrained rotations. The underlying studies aim at the extent to which the pathological predictions of classical elasticity theory in certain singular problems are altered, mitigated, or eliminated in the presence of couple-stresses. The specific problems treated for this purpose refer to the singularities due to concentrated or discontinuous surface loads, to the corner singularity arising from asymmetric shearing tractions, and to the geometrically induced singularities at the corners of a rigid punch and at the tips of a plane crack.
