STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF EQUIPMENT FOR SIMULATING BLIND FLYING. PHASE D.
Abstract
Recommendations concerning improvement of Blue-Amber simulated blind flying equipment are made in two areas: (1) Improved practice with Blue-Amber equipment currently in use; (2) specifications for improved design of the Blue-Amber system. Basic to these improvements are the general characteristics of Blue-Amber, variations in application of the blue-amber principle and limitations of the ordinary Blue-Amber installation. Recommendation for improved usage of existing equipment is made with respect to (1) installation of amber panels, (2) instrument vision, (3) care and storage of equipment, and (4) the role of the pilot. Desirable improvements in physical characteristics of the system are: (1) Development of kits, standardized for aircraft types, containing all materials needed for effective functioning of Blue-Amber; (2) increased light transmission, closer manufacturing tolerance limits and coded identification for blue and amber acetate materials; (3) change in design of brow-rest goggles for increased comfort and development of eye covering attached to the visor of a cap; (4) provision for availability of supplemental artificial cockpit light.
