DESIGN OF SUBMARINE PERISCOPE CONTROLS, COMMENTS ON.
Abstract
A brief examination was made of the blueprints of the controls manipulated by the operators of the periscope. The controls were classified into three groups, those operated by the Captain, those operated by the Checker, and those operated by both. The controls were further classified as to whether they could be pre-set before an attack, or whether they must be manipulated during an attack. Next, each control was examined as to whether it was 'all or none', or continuous in its operation. Finally controls were examined as to size, placement, shape or form, and as to the particular ability called for in their operation. In so far as could be determined from the blue prints, the controls on this periscope, in general, appeared to be well designed in terms of the operator. It was suggested that a prototype or mock-up of this instrument be evaluated in more detail for operational ease and the human factor.
