GEOGRAPHY AND THE PROPERTIES OF SURFACES. THE IDENTIFICATION OF MIXED HEXAGONAL CENTRAL PLACE HIERARCHIES WITH EXAMPLES FROM FINLAND, GERMANY, GHANA AND NIGERIA.

Abstract

It is shown that in the southern portion of Germany, and in Finland, Ghana and Nigeria central place systems have reached maximally probable states which are explainable with the assumption that a hierarchical system of hexagonal market areas is present on the land. Furthermore, it is shown that the existing system results from a mixture of several different central place hierarchies present in these areas.
