MICROBURST PHENOMENA. 3. AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ELECTRON MICROBURSTS AND VLF CHOROUS,

Abstract

Observations made with the Injun 3 satellite of precipitating Ee = or > 40 keV electron microbursts and of VLF chorus emission have revealed their simultaneous occurrence. Observed electron microbursts are always accompanied by a group of VLF chorus emissions; chorus is not necessarily accompanied by microbursts. The maximum region of microburst occurrence from 0400 = or < magnetic local time = or < 1300 and 65 degrees = or < invariant latitude = or < 70 degrees lies well within the maximum region of chorus emissions from 0300 = or < magnetic local time = or < 1500 and 55 degrees = or < invariant latitude = or < 75 degrees. It is not generally possible to find a one to one (burst to burst) correspondence between individual electron microbursts and VLF chorus bursts. (Author)
