FLUCTUATION PHENOMENA AND PHASE TRANSITIONS IN CONDENSED SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The report describes progress made in investigating the critical scattering of X-rays by the binary metallic liquid system Na-Li, and scattering of light from BaTiO3 near the ferroelectric Curie point. Some scattering experiments near the alpha-beta transition of quartz are also described. The Na-Li scattering does not appear to follow Ornstein-Zernike behavior, but further experiments are needed. BaTiO3 shows definite hysteresis effects in the light-scattering, and an increase in intensity near Tc. No special scattering effects are observed so far for quartz near the alpha-beta transition temperature. (Author)
