PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF PLASTIC ENCAPSULATED TRANSISTORS.

Abstract

An evaluation of epoxy and silicone transistor packages was carried out on seven device types. All packages appeared favorable under standard MIL tests below 130C. However, a new realistic environmental test has been devised which appears to detect potentially unreliable devices in less than 500 hours. The results from this test indicate that silicone packages are generally more desirable than epoxy. However, this can vary between manufacturers and some epoxy units have been found to be as stable as silicone, depending on the manufacturer. Results of tests are discussed as well as various problem areas. (Author)
