A METHODOLOGY FOR MILITARY GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS.

Abstract

The principal action in making a military geographic analysis is balancing the facts of the environmental conditions against the operational characteristics of a type of military equipment or the requirements of a particular military activity. A matrix system, adaptable for either manual or machine use, is described. The system is based on key words divided into five general classes--geographic factors, dimensions, properties, attributes, and operational factors. It is concluded that in its present state, the method only gives an indication of one potential direction this type of research can take. If the concept were extended, that is, supplemented by fully automated image recognition scanning and map compilation devices, test personnel believe that as a result of this brief experiment the methodology affords a feasible way to make a military geographic analysis that can be applied directly to an operational situation.
