INFRARED COATING STUDIES.

Abstract

An extensive study program was initiated on the subject of 'double reststrahlen'. Two materials exhibiting such double reststrahlen are PbMoO4 (wulfenite) and CaWO4 (scheelite). The reststrahlen of PbMoO4 cover the 11.3 microns to 13.8 microns and the 31.8 microns to 34.5 microns regions, while the reststrahlen of CaWO4 cover the 11.2 microns to 13.0 microns and the 28.0 microns to 34.0 microns regions. Reflectance measurements of polished PbMoO4 and CaWO4 mineral rocks have been reported. As an aid to analysis of the reststrahlen, a 'curve fitting' technique based on Lorentz dispersion theory was applied. This method yields the real and imaginary parts of the index of refraction uniquely, as a function of wavelength. Experimentally, attempts have been made to produce thin films of PbMoO4 and CaWO4 exhibiting reststrahlen comparable to those of the polished minerals. (Author)
