CHARGED PARTICLE TRACKS IN POLYMERS. NO. 6: A METHOD FOR CHARGE DETERMINATION OF HEAVY, MULTICHARGED COSMIC RAY PARTICLES,

Abstract

A simple, direct and accurate method for charge determination of heavy, multicharged cosmic ray particles is presented. The method is based on the measurement of the portion of the particle range over which a track can be produced by a heavy particle in plastics. Accuracy in Z of plus or minus 1 appears easily attainable. The results of a cellulose nitrate nuclear emulsion stack flown aboard a high altitude balloon are discussed. (Author)
