DETERMINATION OF OPTIMUM WIDTH OF UNVANED DIFFUSERS FOR SINGLE-STAGE CENTRIFUGAL SUPERCHARGERS,

Abstract

The optimum ratio of diffuser width to rotor-blade width (in the exit section) for semiopen rotors is given. Conversion to the optimum b sub 3/b sub 2 ratio enables one to increase the supercharger efficiency by approximately 1.9% (absolute) as compared to the ratio b sub 3/b sub 2 = 1 that is generally adopted. The diffuser passage must be foreshortened from the front (on the side of the open gap between the ends of the rotor blades and the casing). A gain in efficiency is scored by reducing b sub 3/b sub 2 only provided that the transitional section is smooth, without any abrupt changes in the curvature of the boundaries. (Author)
