THE SEMI-INFINITE CYLINDER WITH PRESCRIBED END DISPLACEMENTS.

Abstract

The problem considered here is that of a homogeneous elastic semi-infinite circular cylinder which is free from stress on its curved boundary but has prescribed radial and longitudinal displacements on its plane face. The associated eigenvalue problem is investigated and a method is given for the determination of any particular eigenvalue. The first sixteen eigenvalues are quoted. Eigenfunction expansions are developed for the displacements and in order to satisfy the conditions on the end face two infinite sets of linear equations have to be solved. An approximate solution for a particular case is presented. (Author)
