AN EXPERIMENT ON THE ELECTRIFICATION AND GROWTH OF FROST NEEDLES ON THE SURFACE OF FROZEN WATER DROPS IN AN ELECTRIC FIELD.

Abstract

The paper describes an experiment on the electrification of frost needles during their processes of growth on the surface of frozen water drops in an electric field. The intensity of electrification is found to vary between 0.10 and .01 e.s.u., which is one order of magnitude higher than that generated by the freezing of water drops. The production of such an enormous amount of static charge is considered highly significant in the study of the electrification mechanism within a thundercloud. (Author)
