A FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH STUDY OF THE CONVERSION OF POLYMERS TO FIBERS.
Abstract
In order to do research on the engineering principles which determine the behavior of linear polymers during their conversion to usable fibers, it was necessary first to plan, design and build appropriate dry spinning equipment. Specifications for a research dry spinning operation were developed and a design prepared for a machine to meet these. Purchase of available component parts is under way. Design and fabrication of non-commercially available components are in progress. Assembly was started. The first research will consist of a study of the flow of solutions of linear polymers in true capillaries, the related behavior of these in the 'capillaries' of spinning jets, and the properties of fibers produced from the latter.
