ELECTROLYTIC GROWTH AND PREPARATIONS OF TRANSITION METAL COMPOUND SINGLE CRYSTALS.
Abstract
Single crystals of NbSe2, and WSe2 were grown by a chemical transport technique. The conductivity of NbSe2 which is metallic, varies from 5.5 ohm-cm at 300K to 28 ohm-cm at 100K. It has a superconducting transition temperature at 7K. WSe2 is a p-type semiconductor - conductivity 0.72 ohm-cm at 298K and 120 ohm-cm at 77K. The thermoelectric figure of merit of Ta substituted WSe2 is 0.0005/(deg. K) from 773K to 1273K. Single crystals of Fe(II)0.Fe2(III)03 were grown by chemical transport utilizing HCl as the volitilizing agent. The crystals had an ao = 8.300A as determined by X-ray analysis. Other crystals which can be prepared electrolytically from a flux of MCl2 and MB4O7 are boron, CaB6, SrB6, BaB6, YB6, MnB, TiB2, and TaB2. Polycrystalline samples of TiSi2, ZrSi2, CrSi2, and Fe2Si can also be prepared by electrolyzing mixtures of alkali metal fluorosilicates and fluotitanates. However, these compounds have not been well-characterized. (Author)
