STRATEGIES OF RESEARCH DESIGN IN PSYCHOLOGY.

Abstract

The paper briefly describes the major decision-making areas involved in performing any experiment. These include: (1) Decisions about definitions of key concepts; (2) Decisions about sampling: (3) Decisions about the type of experiment; (4) Decisions about bias and controls; (5) Decisions about experimental design methods; (6) Decisions about statistical analysis; (7) Decisions about curve fitting; (8) Decisions about measurement; (9) Decisions about instruments. Most of the paper is concerned with an analysis with illustrations relevant to human factors training of four of these major areas: first, the role of observation and description in science; second, the problem of definition, with special attention to the operational definition; third, the concept of type of experiment; and fourth, the problem of choice of instrument. The major point of the paper is that only by making explicit the many decisions involved in doing an experiment, can we utilize intelligent strategies of research in psychology. (Author)
