HOT ROLLING OF BIMETALLIC SHEET WITH A THICK COPPER COATING.

Abstract

An investigation was made of the production of steel-copper bimetal, by means of hot rolling of a pack blank by the scheme S-H-H-S permits obtaining bimetallic sheets with a coating thickness of up to 50% and the necessary strength of cohesion. During rolling of bimetallic steel-copper sheets by the indicated scheme, not less than quintuple total reduction of the pack in height, with reduction in the first two passes of not less than 50% at a temperature of heating of 950C, is optimum. To guarantee durable welding of the layers over the entire area it is necessary to ensure reliable protection of the packs during heating before rolling by the creation of protective atmospheres, collaring the pack along the perimeter, etc. The basic advantages of rolling a bimetal by the scheme S-H-H-S are an insignificant degree of irregularity of laminar reduction, the small extent of the region of selective deformation and of losses of the soft component in the burr, the decrease in deformation resistance of the less yielding internal layers. The method can be successfully applied for bonding metals of having great differences in mechanical properties -- for instance, copper with steel. (Author)
