MORPHOLOGY OF THE NEVADA CATTLEBRANDS AND THEIR BLAZONS, PART TWO,

Abstract

The livestock brands of Nevada form a set of approximately four-thousand designs, mainly composed of the capital Roman letters and alterations and combinations of these. The set is systematic enough to be characterized by an iconic 'grammar'. Such a grammar is presented here, revising an earlier version. In addition, this paper presents a characterization of the set of 'names' or 'blazons' which are associated with the brands; the association is shown to be so close as to permit the construction of an especially direct translation algorithm for computing 'blazons' from the iconic specifications of the brands. When the iconic 'grammar' is augmented by the translation rules it becomes, in effect, a single bi-modal algorithm. (Author)
