METEOROLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC (GFR),

Abstract

The article describes the author's impressions during a visit to the German Federal Republic (GFR) of the research in meteorology conducted at universities and research institutes of the GFR. The main impression carried away as a result of the trip was that meteorology in the GFR at the present time is in a state of intensive development. Here the basic contribution in the development of the investigations in the physics of the atmosphere is made by numerous universities and higher technical institutions. The program of investigations embraces, in practice, all branches of meteorology, but especially active work is done in actinometry and atmospheric optics, microclimatology and climatology, chemistry of the atmosphere, physics of the upper layers of the atmosphere, and physics of clouds and precipitation. The Meteorological Service of the GFR has also a large center at Offenbach where research is mainly conducted on the problem of numerical methods of weather forecasting.
