NEUTRON DIFFRACTION STUDY OF ALPHA-LEAD AZIDE.

Abstract

The structure of alpha-lead azide was investigated by using three-dimensional neutron diffraction. The atomic positions were refined in the centrosymmetric space group, Pcmn, and anisotropic temperature factors were obtained for each atom. The interatomic distances are determined with average standard deviations less than 0.01 A. It was found that there are four different types of azide structures in a unit cell. The azide groups are all linear but differ considerably in degree of symmetry and also in bonding to the neighboring atoms. (Author)
