SOIL THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY INVESTIGATION FOR UNDERGROUND SHELTERS.

Abstract

The report presents the experimental findings of a year's collection of data on the in situ thermal characteristics of the particular soils located at the Protective Structures Development Center (PSDC). It contains, in addition to raw data and summary charts and tables relating in situ soil thermal and physical properties, a complete and detailed account of the design, development, fabrication, and use of the primary measuring device and all of its support instrumentation. This report presents the detailed mathematical theory, which is the basis for the design of the device illustrated, together with mathematical and graphical aids that have been developed by PSDC and others for its use in the field. The tests at PSDC were performed on a very limited number of soil types. The primary reason for this testing program was to obtain information pertaining particularly to the soil adjacent to the two structures under test. The data presented in this report accomplish that task. The secondary purpose of this program, that of establishing in situ soil physical-thermal relations, was only partly successful, primarily due to the shortcomings of the method of moisture content determination. However, the data do show qualitative trends for the particular soil types tested. To be of real value, numerous other soil types should be tested, in situ, and the results of all other tests examined simultaneously with the results obtained at PSDC. Only then can definite predictability be accomplished. The data in this report offer a good beginning for undertaking a thorough study of this subject. (Author)
