TEN YEARS OF SOVIET GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORATIONS IN ANTARCTICA,

Abstract

In Antarctica the Soviet geographers studied the relief (geomorphology) of its rocky and glacial surface, the snow-fern depth, climate, waters, wind-worn crust, animal life and vegetation. Soviet cartographic (geodetic) investigations were conducted in the coastal and interior areas of the continent, and also the bottom areas of the Southern Ocean, adjacent to Antarctica. Cartographic-geodetic investigations in the interior helped to determine the main outlines of the Eastern antarctic glacial shield. It was found that the continent extends below the surface of the ocean in the form of a coastal shoal or shelf, followed by a continental decline. Important features of the submerged portion of the continent were determined by sounding devices and recorded on a bathymetric chart. (Author)
