SMALL SCALE VELOCITY STRUCTURE IN THE 30-60 KM. REGION DEDUCTED FROM PAIRED ROBIN SOUNDINGS,

Abstract

The report gives a brief description of the apparatus and data gathering techniques used in the falling-sphere experiment performed at the White Sands Missile Range on March 6, 1965. A method of obtaining smoothed velocity profiles from the raw radar position coordinates is presented and an analysis of radar error in the velocity profiles, made possible by the double radar coverage obtained for the experiment, is given. The study involves a satistical analysis of means, variances, and correlation coefficients for various smoothings and altitude bands. Auto-correlations in the vertical are presented indicating the behaviour with smoothing and permitting an estimate of vertical scale of the motions. The decay of the cross-correlation coefficient between soundings is obtained to permit an estimate of horizontal scale. The results are interpreted and suggestions for further work are presented.
