SYSTEMS STUDY OF A COMPRESSOR RESEARCH TEST FACILITY.

Abstract

A study was made to define functional requirements and establish design criteria for a new compressor research test facility. The program resulted in the selection of a facility configuration along with recommendations for implementing its design and construction. It was found that a facility capable of testing all future fans and compressors would not be economically attractive. The initial design of the facility should be for open cycle operation with an eventual expansion to closed cycle operation. The recommended closed cycle design makes maximum use of existing equipment while providing a wide range of operational capability. Cost tradeoff studies also favored the recommended configuration. A digital simulation model of the selected facility capable of reproducing both off design and dynamic performance was developed and delivered to the Air Force to allow for further investigations.
