NEW SWITCHING CONCEPTS.
Abstract
A theoretical and experimental investigation was made into new switching concepts, the objective was to evolve new design concepts for switching high power in pulse modulators. High vacuum and gas discharge devices were both examined in some detail. Digital computer calculations were directed to an outward radial type of electron flow from a curved cylindrical cathode. The optimum electrode configuration determined by the computer calculations indicated that the entire electron beam could be collected at less than 1% of the modulating anode voltage. The experimental radial beam tube did actually provide a means of producing the desired highly laminar electron flow. In the gaseous discharge switch investigations the emphasis was concentrated on controlling pulse shape and duration through the application of magnetic fields. Although extensive experimentation into the types of fields and methods of application revealed that high power levels and short duration pulses would require prohibitive power levels for the establishment of the magnetic fields, useful applications do suggest themselves. It is recommended that magnetically switched gas discharge tubes be used as switch devices to control high current and/or long pulse in individual pulse applications. Such tubes could also have broad application as series fuse switch devices in high power crowbaring applications.
