SOME NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS IN CONNECTION WITH APPLICATION OF THE COMPENSATION THEOREM TO MIXED PATH PROPAGATION PROBLEMS,

Abstract

The problem of sky-wave radiation from an antenna placed in a mixed land-sea area is treated numerically. The calculations are based directly upon the compensation theorem and have been carried out in the following special case: two media (one perfectly conducting), straight-line-boundary, the line from transmitter to receiver perpendicular to the boundary line. The calculations are facilitated by three ALGOL procedures for solving the following problems: (1) Computation of the definite integral of a complex valued function of one real parameter. (2) Approximation of the complementary error integral with complex argument. (3) Approximation of Sommerfeld's attenuation function. The integration required by use of the compensation theorem was very carefully treated from a numerical point of view (accuracy, computing time etc.). For a typical example, the necessary integration area was determined by numerical investigation, and an attempt was made to generalize the result to other cases using the concept of modified Fresnel zones. The result obtained by the numerical integration (of the typical example) was compared with a result obtained by a purely analytical treatment. Finally, possible ways of describing the variation of the electrical parameters of the ground was discussed. (Author)
