AIR-SEA INTERACTION STUDIES IN BUZZARDS BAY, MASSACHUSETTS.

Abstract

A buoy was designed and built to serve as an instrument mount for studies on air sea interaction processes. The buoy was set 400 feet SE of the Buzzards Bay Entrance Light Station, 4.5 NM SW of Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts. Mean wind profiles, air temperature profiles and currents were measured, and the following observations carried out under known mean conditions: sea surface elevation by means of an array of six wave gauges, instantaneous wind at six heights, simultaneously with the output from one wave gauge, horizontal pressure gradient just above the crest height of the waves simultaneously with the water height at two wave gauges, a number of temperature casts were made in sequence, a number of transducers and techniques for future experiments were tried out.
