THEORETICAL RESEARCH IN ASTROPHYSICS.

Abstract

Theoretical research in astrophysics for the period from 1 April 1965 to 15 September 1967 is summarized. The following topics are included. (A) Theory of quasars and strong radio sources. (1) Evolution of dense star systems; (2) Dynamics of stellar collisions; (3) Light fluctuations in quasars; (4) Structure of radio sources; (5) Thermal instability due to synchrotron radiation; (6) Cosmic ray electrons and positrons; (7) Quasars and 'ghost images'; (8) Radiative transfer of x-rays; (9) Intergalactic absorption lines. (B) Dynamics of HII regions. (1) Similarity solutions for the expansion of HII regions; (2) Stability of ionization fronts; (3) Recombination fronts in stellar wind flow; (4) Destruction of interstellar molecules; (5) Maser action in interstellar OH. (C) Stellar winds. (1) Blast waves in stellar wind flows; (2) Whistlers transonic flow in stellar winds; (3) The effect of cosmic ray pressure gradients on the solar wind. (D) Plasma physics. (1) Non-linear plasma oscillations. (Author)
