AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH DISCOURSE STRUCTURE, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO ANAPHORIC RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract

A brief account is given of a program system that attempts to recognize relationships constitutive of English discourse structure on the basis of syntactic and morphemic parallels. Results of operating the system on a sample text are presented. Attention is focused on the nature of discourse relationships, and more particularly on the problem of how to interpret discourse equivalences obtained by Harris's techniques.
