COMPOSITE MATERIALS (MATERIAUX COMPOSITES)

Abstract

Composite materials are becoming increasingly important in various areas of aerospace design. Specific aspects of composite materials have been brought to the fore by the successful use of reinforced plastics as high strength materials. This achievement has called attention to the mechanism of the reinforcement of a low modulus matrix by high modulus, high specific strength fibrous materials. The hope has arisen of adapting this achievement to other structural requirements by reinforcing metal matrices with high rigidity, high tensile strength reinforcements such as whiskers and metallic filaments for various temperature applications. Studies have made it possible to prepare a list of research problems which are considered to be most important for the promotion of the rapid development of composite materials for aerospace applications.
