A COINCIDENCE COMPUTER FOR THE ERDE RECORDING SYSTEM FOR PROPELLANT EVALUATION.

Abstract

One of the requirements in the ballistic assessment of propellants is the measurement of pressure integral and time-of-burning from ignition to the end of the pressure plateau when pressure begins to fall. This period is known as 'action-time' and was previously obtained by a mid-tangent construction on a photographic record. From a number of previous records it was established that the turnover point was a function of both time-of-burning and rate of change of pressure, i.e. for a particular motor the value of t(dP/dt) was constant when turnover occurred. An analogue coincidence computer was designed in which the product t(dP/dt) is monitored continuously and compared with a fixed negative value, -K, which is pre-set according to the motor being tested. When coincidence occurs (t(dP/dt) = -K), an output pulse is available to operate existing equipment which then registers time-of-burning and pressure integral up to the coincidence point. (Author)
