MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ORTHOGONAL FILAMENT WOUND PLASTIC LAMINATES. REINFORCED PLASTICS FOR DEEP SUBMERGENCE AND OTHER HIGH STRENGTH APPLICATIONS.
Abstract
Orthogonal (2:1 orientation) S-HTS glass reinforced laminates were fabricated with variations in construction and in fiber dispersion, and were evaluated for mechanical properties. No differences in mechanical properties were observed between a laminate fabricated with preimpregnated roving and commercial tape and an equivalent material made with roving exclusively, nor did a variation in fiber dispersion, in winding, from 200 to 280 ends/in. cause any notable difference in properties. Compressive strength of the laminates, as determined by the NASL notched flat compression method, averaged 177,500 psi in the stronger ('2') direction. These data correlate with values reported in biaxial hydrostatic tests on cylindrical specimens. Individual high values in excess of 190,000 psi attained indicate the possibility of producing materials with compressive strengths of 200,000 psi. (Author)
