CATION EXCLUSION BY INTERFACIAL WATER STRUCTURE.

Abstract

As an interface is approached pure water and aqueous electrolytic solutions become increasingly structured. This enhanced structure tends to exclude water-structure altering solutes. A series of simple elution studies using 80-120 mesh silica, on 0.10M solutions of the alkali chlorides shows that the extent of exclusion of these cations is correlated with their viscosity B-coefficients, a measure of their effect on water structure.
