REFLEXIONS GENERALES SUR LA SECURITE DES MATERIAUX ET DES STRUCTURES (GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE SAFETY FACTORS OF MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES),

Abstract

The notion of safety gets clearer when the notions of frequency and probability are taken into account and when the nature of the accidents, the risks of which one intends to reduce, and the importance of their consequences are considered. A safety coefficient can adequately be selected only through the striking of a balance which takes into account the various economic factors varying with this coefficient. Particularly, the selection of a material and the design of a structure can only be effected after tests so numerous as to allow the assessment of the risks of damage of the structure considered. A test, whatever its nature, assumes value only if it can be summarized by the mean value x sub n and the mean quadratic divergence y sub n of the results obtained from a given number of tests. These figures allow the calculation of the mean value x and of the mean quadratic divergence y of the overall material concerned. The foregoing reflections lead to practical remarks on the carrying out and analysis of tests on materials and models. (Author)
