THE THEORETICAL DETERMINATION OF NORMAL MODES AND FREQUENCIES OF VIBRATION,

Abstract

The various methods that have been devised for the determination of the natural frequencies and normal modes of aircraft are discussed and their accuracy and the amount of work that they entail are compared. The discussion is mainly from the point of view of the flutter analyst, who commonly bases his analysis on the normal modes. An extensive bibliography is given in Appendix I. In Appendix II Duncan's displacement functions are given for the cases of a cantilever in bending and in torsion, and in Appendix III the escalator method is described. (Author)
