STATUS OF OCEANOGRAPHIC SHIPS IN THE UNITED STATES WITH A VIEW INTO FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS,

Abstract

The paper describes the historical development of oceanographic ships and defines the functions of present research and survey ships. The classical investigations, as well as some of the more specialized tasks, are detailed. The organization of present research and survey agencies and operations in the United States are catalogued, and the future trends in ships for oceanographic research and exploration are indicated.
