DISTRIBUTION OF NET-SAMPLED PHYTOPLANKTON AS EFFECTED BY HYDROLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN THE NORTH INDIAN OCEAN,
Abstract
In the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean in October-December 1960, areas with both high and low phytoplankton quantities were distinguished. Rich areas were situated to the north of 12 degrees N and to the south of 8 degrees N, the barren area being found between 12 degrees N and 8 degrees N and off the Arabian Peninsula coast. The phytoplankton distribution can be interpreted as a result of the peculiarities of dynamic processes in the Arabian Sea; circulation in that period was in a transitional stage between the monsoons. The dependence of the phytoplankton quantity (average cell number per cu m for the layer 0-100m) on temperature and phosphate content at the depth of 100m was established. In the Bay of Bengal work was carried out during the winter monsoon in February. Phytoplankton number did not exceed 500 cells cu/m. A tongue of higher phytoplankton number was found to the southwest of the Nicobar Islands. In the Andaman Sea the phytoplankton number was considerable--more than 5000 cells/cu m. (Author)
