STUDY OF LASER APPLICATION TO VELOCITY MEASURING SYSTEM.

Abstract

The report summarizes results of the feasibility study phase utilizing a laser doppler system for determining high accuracy velocity and acceleration profiles of high speed rocket sleds. The report also presents recommendations and specifications for an operational laser velocity measuring system. Objectives of the study phase were twofold: the first and primary one being the implementation and testing of a laser doppler velocity measuring system. Construction of the experimental breadboard incorporated designs and modifications which were dictated by earlier experimental results and the latest state-of-the-art techniques; the second objective was the design, fabrication and testing of a laser beam steering control which would enable the transmitted laser energy to be concentrated on a sled-mounted retroreflector during sled travel.
