STUDIES WITH NOVEL SONAR DISPLAYS.

Abstract

Using a general purpose sonar/radar simulator target detection performance was compared for two sonar displays. One display was a conventional sonar PPI display. The other display, termed a 'wedge' display, encouraged a different pattern of visual search. It was hypothesized that the wedge display would result in superior detection performance. Five experiments were conducted--a study of target visibility thresholds, two studies of target detection performance and two studies of detection performance in a vigilance setting. The wedge display was shown to result in superior detection performance. (Author)
