FLOW TURNING.

Abstract

Flow turning, in which the work piece is plastically deformed over a hardened, rotating mandrel by the action of one or more hardened rollers, is especially useful in the manufacture of engine components from present-day expensive alloys since the volume of material worked remains the same throughout the process; there is no waste in the form of swarf, etc. Descriptions are given of the fundamentals of the process, the machines and tooling required, the advantages and disadvantages of the process, the materials which can be worked, and typical components.
