LOW ENERGY X-RAY AND ELECTRON PHYSICS.

Abstract

The research is concerned with a study of the complete interaction of the ultrasoft x-rays with matter in the 10-to-100 A wavelength region and of the associated production of photo and Auger electrons in the 10 to 1000 electron volt energy region. Such a study is important because it is on an area of atomic physics which has been hitherto neglected and because it has important applications to chemical and solid state analysis, microanalysis, high temperature plasma diagnostics, and to x-ray astronomy via rockets and satellites. The specific objectives of this grant period were: (1) The measurement and tabulation of ultrasoft x-ray interaction coefficients. (2) The continued development and refinement of methods for the generation, the detection and the spectroscopy of the low energy x-rays and electrons. (3) The application, independently and collaboratively of the low energy x-ray and electron interaction physics and its associated instrumentation to the chemical and valence band analysis of matter and high temperature plasma analysis through the ultrasoft x-ray spectroscopy of the solar corona. A resume of the results of the research and a list of publications are given. (Author)
