NOVEL TRIS(PHOSPHINATES) OF CHROMIUM(III).

Abstract

Although tris(phosphinates) of chromium(III) would be expected to be intractable amorphous or crystalline solids built from three-dimensional networks, it was found possible to make coherent films of a series of compounds represented by the general formula (CR(OPRR'O)2(OPR'R'''O))x. These products have a variety of physical properties unprecedented for coordination polymers with inorganic backbones. Initial attempts to prepare chromium(III) trisphosphinates by metathesis led to the expected insoluble, infusible powders. Subsequently, however, coherent films of chromium(III) tris(methylphenylphosphinate) were isolated which exhibited properties, such as tensile strength, typical of high-molecular-weight polymers. Subsequently, a general synthetic method was developed and used for the preparation of a series of chromium(III) tris(phosphinates).
