STATISTICAL PREDICTION OF WAVE-INDUCED RESPONSES IN DEEP-OCEAN TOWER STRUCTURES.
Abstract
The result is shown of adapting a general fluidelastic systems diagram to the specific problem of wave-induced vibrations in deep-ocean towers. Chapter 2 describes in detail the procedures used in idealizing the four systems: wave surface heights, ocean, force, and structural. The chapter concludes by presenting the nonlinear, nonclassical equations of motion for the deep-ocean tower structure. These equations consider only inertial and drag forces on a tower rigidly fixed to the ocean floor. Lift force and foundation effects appear in the discussion of the final chapter. Solving the nonlinear, nonclassical equations of motion is the task of Chapter 3, which performs the solution using a semilinear approach. A sample problem appears in Chapter 4 as a numerical example to which the model theory of Chapters 2 and 3 can be applied. Chapter 5 discusses the sample problem results and draws general conclusions for use in future deep-ocean tower problems. With the model synthesized from the viewpoint of the preceding paragraph, Chapter 6 is able to show model refinements which can account for effects arising from lift forces and foundation and structural material nonlinearities.
