ON CONDITIONS FOR THE EXISTENCE OF DECAYING SOLUTIONS OF THE END PROBLEM OF CYLINDERS.

Abstract

A Laplace transform method is applied to the problem of a semi-infinite homogeneous elastic circular cylinder which is free from stress on the curved boundary but has some form of prescribed displacements and/or axially symmetric stresses on the plane face. The eigen-function expansion is constructed in a rigorous way and the conditions are derived which allow the stress function to exhibit a decaying form. Associated with this problem is the Principle of Saint-Venant and in the last section is presented a numerical value to the fundamental decay constant. (Author)
