BRAKE FLUID SEDIMENT CAUSED BY RUBBER CUPS.

Abstract

The object of the study was to extend the investigation of the parameters affecting the formation of sediment in brake fluids, particularly sediment caused by rubber cups. Parameters studied include sediment formation and solvency vs boiling point of brake fluid components, effect of water and water vapor, uniformity of cup manufacture, and effect of temperature on sediment formation. Brake fluids extract stearic acid from SBR cup formulations in current use and provide a medium for the formation of zinc stearate. Conventional high boiling fluids have less solvency for the zinc stearate that is formed. This factor promotes increased sediment formation. Possible remedies and solutions are discussed. (Author)
