STUDY OF THE IMMUNOPATHOLOGY OF MALARIA AND OTHER HEMOSPORIDIAN INFECTIONS.

Abstract

Antigens were found in the sera of animals with acute malarial or babesial infections. These antigens appear to be closely associated with the serum globulins, can be detected after the development of patent parasitemia and persist in the serum as long as significant parasitemia is present. The origin of the antigens has not been established. Studies of infected erythrocytes with fluorescein-labeled antibody to serum antigens indicated that the antigens might be present in the cytoplasm of erythrocytes housing mature parasites. However, these antigens have as yet not been liberated in a recognizable form from infected erythrocytes. The possibility that they are antigen-antibody complexes that possess antigen and/or antibody activity is considered. (Author)
