Development and Management of a Computer-Centered Data Base: Part 8: Adapting Mass Storage Equipment for the Handling of a Data Base

Abstract

The introduction elaborates the title of the oral paper, and lists the hardware that is available for mass storage, describing its characteristics. Definitions of a few necessary terms are presented, and operations on files are listed and discussed. A discussion of the important basic system considerations of I/0 balance, timing, and available design strategies follows. System-analysis criteria are supplied so that the designer, once he has defined his task and chosen his strategy, may proceed to design within the constraints chosen. Several additional considerations are also given. Following a summary of the material a startling time-comparison from a recent technical paper is presented.
