SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF THERMICS AND CURRENTS OF THE SEA OF JAPAN,

Abstract

The currents and their effect on water temperature in various parts of the Sea of Japan are analyzed in detail. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of a view expressed by Shrenk in 1874. According to it, the northern Sea of Japan is cooled by the cold Liman(skoye) Current which flows from the Sea of Okhotsk through proliv Nevel'skogo; whereas the Sakhalin coast is warmed by the Japanese Current. In order to evaluate the situation, the entire current system of the Sea of Japan is discussed by using all of the available hydrological data. It appears that the effect of the Liman Current is negligible since it brings a small amount of Okhotsk water into the Sea of Japan. Instead, the effect of climatological phenomena, notably the closeness of the Asian land mass, is considerable on the vertical and horizontal water temperature stratification. Its effect is most intense on the northern part of the Sea of Japan; whereas the effect of Sakhalin is much smaller on the eastern part of the sea. (Author)
